World Food Day at Terra

Event details

World Food Day is a global celebration of food and an opportunity to raise awareness about the critical issues surrounding food security and hunger. Terra will be celebrating World Food Day on Oct 14 in collaboration with the Waste Lab and PxB. The day will include community activities, sustainable food tasting and seminars on composting to advocate for access to nutritious and sustainable food for all.

Beyond the festivities, World Food Day at Terra is a reminder of our shared responsibility to encourage everyone to take action and collaborate to create a world where everyone has access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food, not just on this day but every day.

Activities to look forward to:

Waste Sorting & Segregating Game:
Using a range of activity cards, children are encouraged to think about what their waste card is, and how it can be best dealt with. *HINT – Everything still has a value to be reused or recycled!
The Stages of Decomposition:
This is a chance to explore a series of real examples of food scraps at different stages of decomposition. The physical samples (enclosed and odor/mess-free) bring to life the process of composting, and retaining the value of our food waste.
Magnifying Compost:
Our fresh compost is a wonderful resource to be able to handle and investigate. Using magnifying glasses, children can look for, and study the living organisms that work with our compost, and relish the earthy smell that the beneficial microorganisms create when they support the life in soils.
Healthy & Unhealthy Soils Experiment:
Using bread and flour as examples of healthy and degraded soils, children can take part in a hands-on experiment that demonstrates the effect of rainfall and irrigation on different conditions of soil.
The Waste Lab Talk:
Join us for a 20-minute talk about the global issue of food loss and waste and its effect upon our environment. With impactful and contextualised facts about the food loss and waste landscape, alongside actionable and supportive hints and tips for reducing food waste, this session gives participants the education and tools they need for having a positive impact in their own lives.
Show & Tell Story Time with the Terra Compost Worms:
Want to learn more about worm composting but don’t know where to start? Join us for a child-friendly story time about how important worms are to our ecosystem! Then, enjoy a unique Show & Tell session with the Terra Compost Worms, who are working their magic, restoring nutrition to our ecosystem and teaching us all about how easy composting can be.
