Maungo Craft
Integrating orphan crops into the food system
Problem
Underutilisation and wastage of indigenous commercial fruits
Solution
Upcycle underutilized orphan crops, to create unique value chain
About the company
Founded in 2017, Maungo Crafts up-cycles underutilized and indigenous African fruits, such as Marula, Baobab and Lerotse, by creating a unique value chain with indigenous oil manufacturers and smallholder farmers to produce multi-award winning, unique, jams, hot sauce, syrups, and fruit rolls. Maungo Craft's mission promotes food diversity by up-cycling 'orphan crops' and contributes to water conservation by integrating drought-tolerant Marula fruit into the food system, reducing water usage in both the growing phase and manufacturing process. They are creating jobs down the value chain, mainly for women and vulnerable communities.
